TikTok Influencers Fueling Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within moments of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller sent an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But fake injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
