The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
