Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Penalties

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or wealth.
