Are You Able to Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary Globe

There are many candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a modest trading ship required approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”

Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber to boards with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the world.

The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part converted its circular motion to vertical action for the saw. Another component transformed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s movement advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Each element was simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate these parts in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized order, sawing on every downward stroke and moving on every return stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
